Flavours of King Island

SEAFOOD
It’s the one thing everybody knows about King Island - our seafood, beef, pork, smallgoods, bakery and dairy products are exceptional. In season try our succulent rock lobster more commonly called crayfish. There are magnificent local Sea Elephant oysters, grown in the pristine waters of King Island's Sea Elephant River, giant King crabs and fresh local scale fish.

At KING ISLAND SEAFOODS you can watch Donna and Max split oysters - and eat them  straight away. You can choose a rock lobster or King crab from the holding tanks and have it freshly cooked and packed ready to take back home. Local scale fish available at King Island Seafoods includes Snotty Trevally, Bastard Trumpeter, Shark, Silver Trevalley, Magpie Perch, Stripy Trumpeter, Luderick and Sweep.

KING ISLAND BEEF
King Island has the ideal conditions for premium beef production. Lying midway between Victoria and Tasmania, the island has a temperate climate, abundant rainfall, nutrient-rich pastures and is one of the world’s cleanest and most natural environments.

King Island Beef is world renowned for being consistently succulent, tender and full of flavour. To ensure our product achieves these characteristics, all cattle are carefully selected from farmers on the island who have a longstanding relationship with Swift Australia's King Island processing facility www.kingislandbeef.com.au

Genuine King Island Beef

Processing takes place at the island’s only meat processing facility and all packaged product carries the Australian Inspected 790 Establishment Number stamp. This shows that the beef has been produced on King Island and to the highest export standard. It is also the mark of genuine King Island Beef!
No added hormones or antibiotics

King Island Beef is both natural and healthy for you. King Island Beef farmers do not feed their cattle hormone growth promotants, antibiotics or other unnecessary drugs, so you can be sure that you are eating a natural product of the highest quality.

Cattle are 100% vegetarians

King Island Beef cattle are strict vegetarians as they are not fed any animal by-products. Cattle on the island graze all year-round on natural pastures that are free of Genetic Modifications and chemical residues.

Grassfed beef has a superior beef flavour and is a super healthy alternative for those who seek the ultimate healthy lifestyle. Grassfed beef is very lean and contains high levels of nutrients such as vitamin B12, zinc, iron and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that actually reduce cholesterol and help protect against heart disease.

King Island Beef is Tenderness Guaranteed
The genuine King Island Beef brand is tenderness guaranteed by the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading system.

Advantages of the MSA grading system:
MSA beef is an award winning, tenderness guaranteed grading program. All MSA graded beef is labelled with a guaranteed grade and recommended cooling method to identify beef eating quality according to consumer feedback and best management practices from the paddock to the plate.

As apart of MSA grading program every animal has a DNA sample taken and is fully traceable from the restaurant or retail butcher all the way back to the farming family that raised it.

King Island smallgoods, particularly smoked beef and salamis, have a reputation all of their own. Local butcher, John Boschetto of Grassy Harbour Gourmet Meat produces a range of Italian smallgoods which includes Prosciutto, Capocollo, Salami and Mortadella. GRASSY HABOUR GOURMET MEAT also has available smoked King Island eel and smoked black back salmon as well as carrying a range of fresh meat lines and sausages including marinated King Island lamb.

Russell’s King Island Butchery has a range of gourmet fresh sausages made from choice King Island meats as well as a range of fresh meat lines including King Island beef, pork and lamb.

PEPPER
King Island also has its own brand of pepper, King Island Mountain Pepper. The leaves, bark and berries are extremely hot and can all be used in cooking. The berries are mainly used for adding a spicy flavour to casseroles and soups and are also great for peppered steaks and any dish that needs a bit of a distinctive flavour. The leaves are just as hot and exciting as the berries.  Buy at Caroline's "Wild Thing" located ont he way to the Currie Harbour or email: devilsgap@kingisland.net.au

KELP
Dennis_Peta While beachcombing King Island's rugged West coast Dennis and Peta Klumpp often marvelled at the giant bull kelp fronds cast up after storms. With the nutritional benefits of seaweeds widley proclaimed, they sought ways to tap this largely neglected resource.

Dennis’ background in industrial chemistry and his passion for creating interesting culinary dishes came to the fore, leading to the creation of four unique kelp based products - Kelp Chutney, Hot Kelp Pickles, Kelp Lemon Spread and Hot & spicy Kelp Sauce.

The delicious flavours compliment King Island Cheese, beef and seafood and make an ideal souvenir gift.
